Chinese democracy
The Olympic torch is coming to San Francisco and the city is gearing up for the onslaught of human rights protesters. While I certainly don’t support the oppression of human rights (unless I am personally doing the oppressing) I find this method of protest downright silly. First of all, the Olympic torch as a symbol is only tangentially related to the human rights violations in China. Second, no one that actually matters gives a flying fuck. Does anyone seriously believe that China’s attitude towards Tibet is going to change because of some western douchebags with signs?
Here is an idea: if you really feel that strongly about China’s human rights violations maybe you should stop buying products made in China. Oh right that is actually hard. After all, how will you live blog from the torch ceremony without your Chinese manufactured mobile phone? Nope, best to take a day off work and tackle the Olympic torchbearer instead. It won’t make the smallest difference, but it might you feel better about yourself. And isn’t that what is really important?
And keep purchasing those Chinese manufactured mobile devices. My wallet thanks you.
